The Toronto Institute of Advanced Manufacturing (TIAM) provides innovation and leadership in advanced manufacturing through research and development, training and education. The research falls into 3 main themes: Theme 1 - Manufacturing of Advanced Materials This area focuses on the development of innovative, new, multifunctional materials with unique properties and diverse applications. Examples of these advanced materials include nanomaterials, photonics, optoelectronics, hybrids and foams. These materials are high-performance and sustainable, reducing current manufacturing problems of material consumption and waste. Theme 2 - Advanced Processes & Systems This area focuses on the techniques and facilities employed to manufacture new and existing materials in a more efficient and effective manner. This area also encompasses technologies used to give these advanced materials their unique properties. Examples of these techniques include additive manufacturing, nanostructuring, surface engineering and advanced coating. Theme 3 - Knowledge-Based Manufacturing This area focuses on the representation of knowledge surrounding advanced manufacturing processes, materials and products. This knowledge supports automated reasoning and analysis techniques, leading to better predictive and diagnostic models. This approach will also improve control systems used in making decisions about design and production within the enterprise. Examples include automated reasoning, enhanced analysis techniques, predictive and diagnostic models, and integration of data. Advanced Sensing, Internet of Things
The Robotics and Automation Laboratory (RAL) and Mechatronics Laboratory (ML) to conduct fundamental and applied research in the science of robotics (semi & fully automated and remote controlled systems) and mechatronics (integration of intelligent & autonomous systems), to educate at undergraduate and graduate levels in the field of robotics and mechatronics, to conduct industrial research and development under contract, to spin off technologies to the commercial market
Smart & Adaptive Polymer Laboratory - Research that focuses on advanced manufacturing technology including active polymers, biopolymers and polymer composites. This research includes characterization of their properties, correlation of morphological variations with properties, and multiphysics analytical and numerical modeling of these materials systems.
Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIMLab) - embodies the means for storage, retrival, manipulation and presentation; the mechanisms by which to sense state, and modicfy substance; and the methodologies by which to unite them. This lab provides students and research associates with the necessary facilities to contribute to this goal.
